In this episode, Don wraps up the Smooth and Easy trilogy with a deep dive into the producers, records, and harmony stacks that shaped his ears β€” and the sound he’s now aiming for with his own production: The Wall of Don. Episode 22 introduced The Spark. Episode 23 focused on Laying the Lyrics. Episode 24 climbs into the lineage: Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, 10CC, Roy Thomas Baker, Mutt Lange, Donnie Iris… and finally, how all of that funnels into Don’s plan for building massive, modern vocal layers on β€œSmooth & Easy.”

Along the way, you’ll hear about required listening homework, the balance between planning and instinct, and two cozy holiday recipes: a stovetop 3-egg egg nog and a no-roll pumpkin pie that reuses a pie pan and presses the crust right in with your thumbs. We close with a life lesson about layering your life like great vocal stacks, and a journaling prompt to help you decide which layer to build next.

🧠 Life Lesson – Layer Your Life

Just like great vocal stacks, a great life is built in layers. You don’t have to do everything at once. Add one intentional layer at a time β€” in music, work, and life β€” and let each layer support the next. The Wall of Don didn’t happen in a day, and neither will your best work… but it will happen if you keep adding smart, deliberate layers.

πŸ“ Journaling Prompt

β€œWhat is one layer of my life I could strengthen this week β€” and what would the next layer look like once that’s in place?”
